How to Lock On in Monster Hunter Rise on Nintendo Switch

At a glance

Press the right stick to select a large monster. Target Camera turns toward it when you press L; Focus Camera follows the selected target continuously.

Select a target on Switch

Press the right stick to select or cycle through large-monster targets. Hold it to cancel the selection. These controls refer to the default Nintendo Switch controller layout.

Selecting a monster controls the camera target. It does not make every melee attack or arrow automatically hit.

Target Camera versus Focus Camera

Open Start Menu → Options → Camera → Camera Style.

Camera style How it behaves
Target Camera Press L to turn the camera toward your selected monster.
Focus Camera The camera keeps following your selected monster.

With default Target Camera controls, one press of L turns toward the target and two presses face your hunter’s direction. Target Camera Controls can change this behavior.

If L faces the wrong way

Enter a map with a large monster, select it with the right stick, then try L. If the camera only looks in your hunter’s direction, confirm that a target is selected and check whether Target Camera Controls were changed.

Try Focus Camera if you prefer continuous following. PC keyboard bindings and other controller layouts differ from the Switch buttons above.
